Wal-Mart, Hanes, Macy's Labels Sewn Under Illegal and Abusive Conditions

- Management confiscates guest workers' passports;

- Mandatory 15-hour shifts, seven days a week;

- Workers shortchanged on their legal overtime pay;

- Anyone questioning Galaxy management is threatened with arrest and forcible deportation;

- "Horrible" food, no heat or hot water in the factory or dorms;  filthy drinking water;

- Are Wal-Mart, Hanes, Macy's aware of these subcontracts?

The Classic Fashion Apparel Group also subcontracts the sewing of Wal-Mart, Hanes and Macy's labels to an abusive sweatshop factory called Galaxy, where conditions are even worse than in Classic.

 

  • Human Trafficking:  All foreign guest workers' passports are confiscated by Galaxy management.

  • Threats of forcible deportation:  Any worker daring to question factory conditions is immediately threatened with arrest and forcible deportation.

  • Mandatory 15-hour shifts, from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. seven days a week:  Workers report that there are also routine all-night shifts, often twice each week.  Workers are at the factory well over 100 hours a week.  At most, workers are allowed just two days off a month.

  • In November 2009, management tried to impose a new starting time-6:00 a.m.-for the daily shifts.  The workers had to go out on a three-day strike to block this.

  • Shortchanged on overtime pay:  Workers report being routinely shortchanged on the legal overtime pay due them.

  • Bed bugs, and no hot water or heat:  The dorms are so infested with bed bugs that the workers have trouble sleeping despite their exhaustion.  Nor is there hot water or heat in the dorms or in the factory.  (In the winter, temperatures often drop below freezing.)  Workers report that the drinking water is not potable and is often contaminated with worms.

  • Sick days prohibited:  Management forces workers to report to the factory, no matter how ill they are.  There is no doctor in the factory, and absolutely no medical services.

  • Workers describe the factory food as "horrible":  For breakfast, management provides only pita bread and tea.  Lunch is mashed potatoes and lentils.  Dinner is lentils and fish, which is often rotten and foul smelling.

  • Fifty workers stripped of their work permits:  At least 50 workers are being held under illegal conditions.  Management has not provided these workers with work permits or other necessary identity cards.  If guest workers are stopped by the police and fail to provide their work permits, they will be immediately imprisoned.

  • No annual leave:  Galaxy's workers have no annual vacation leave, nor are they being paid overtime correctly for being forced to work through their vacation time.
