Economic Policy Institute expert Robert Scott writes, “Rising trade deficits are to blame for most of the 5.7 million U.S. manufacturing jobs (nearly a third of manufacturing employment) lost since April 1998.”

Nike is truly the canary in the coal mine, pointing us to what unfettered “free trade” looks like, and what the world will look like under the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Nike has 330,000 workers in Vietnam, most of them young women, making sneakers while earning just 48 to 69 cents an hour.  Nor do any of the Vietnamese workers have protection for their basic rights.
