Ocean Sky ─ Workers Paid 8 Cents for Each $25 NFL T-shirt They Sew

Share

Women at Ocean Sky factory in El Salvador are paid 8 cents for each $25 NFL T-shirt they sew. The Institute and Women Transforming (Mujeres Transformando, El Salvador) successfully engaged major buyers, including Adidas-Reebok, Puma, Columbia, Gap and Perry Ellis.  Workers have won significant improvements

Workers sewing for NFL, Reebok, Puma, Old Navy (owned by Gap), Columbia, Talbots and Penguin (Musingwear) are monitored by surveillance cameras at work where they are drenched in sweat due to up to 98 degree Fahrenheit factory temperatures.  They are provided filthy water, forced to work overtime, cursed at and get paid 72 to 92 cents an hour.

Corporate codes of conducts and monitoring of NFL, Reebok, Puma and Gap have failed miserably.  The U.S.-Central America Free Trade Agreement has ended in a race to the bottom, with workers stripped of their rights and trapped in poverty.
